What is mudpuddle of blue?
My name is Christensen and I was a correctional sergeant for four years at the Oklahoma State Penitentiary. I worked and ran both maximum and medium security units. When I first started the inmates would call shift change a “sea of blue” when they looked out their windows and saw all of us officers. A couple of years later we were running an 800 inmate maximum security penitentiary, sometimes with just 20 people every shift.
I was already planning on writing this book before I left and racked my brain on just what to call it. After months of thinking and talking it over with other officers, I settled on Mudpuddle of Blue. No longer are we a sea of blue, more like a puddle. It’s a dirty job hence the mud and in prison we wore the blue.
Mudpuddle of Blue stands for all of us, the ones who have died and the ones still alive. The ones who left corrections and the ones that have been left behind still fighting the good fight. It is my greatest hope to bring some much needed attention to the brothers and sisters I left behind. Mudpuddle of Blue is more than just a single book. It’s more of a hub, the book is just the beginning, over time I aim to put others stories out there too, interviews, photos, resources and more. These folks need your support and I aim to show you why.
I would also like to give a huge thank you to all my supporters, fellow officers, and family for making this book happen. Dozens of officers former and current assisted in the making of the book and I couldn’t have done it without your help. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
